Minister Says Ministry of Defence Examining Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing secret information in any cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel

During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.

He explained that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a issue in all modern cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in every areas of official activities, from vehicle use to communication practices.
